Transferring registrations
You cannot transfer a new domain name registration or a new Registrant profile to another Registrar for the first 30 days from the time that the new registration application is activated by CIRA.
There are a number of transfer possibilities. CIRA has designed their database such that there can be more than one registrar submitting information updates for a specific registrant, but each domain is the responsibility of one registrar. This creates a myriad of possibilities for transfers. The following list just moves domains and registrants from one registrar to another. The move is initiated by the receiving registrar, so if you wish to make dot-ca-registry your registrar choose this option.
- transfer one specific Domain Name or Registrant profile from a different Registrar
- transfer a Registrant profile and all of the Domain Name registrations that they hold from a different Registrar
- transfer all of the Domain Names held by a Registrant (including the Registrant profile if necessary) that are currently managed by a specified Registrar
- transfer some of the domain names held by a Registrant to another Registrar, either by creating a list of domain names to include in the transfer or by creating a list of domain names to exclude from the transfer (sorry, not supported - please transfer individual domains for now)
We can also transfer a domain from one registrant to another. This event actually requires three approvals, the initiating registrant, the receiving registrar, and the receiving registrant, before it is activated at CIRA. The Registrar managing the Registrant who originally holds the domain names must initiate the process. Interestingly, the receiving registrar is billed for the procedure so you would have to check their rates. You cannot transfer a new domain name registration to another Registrant within the first 30 days of the activation of the domain name registration. You will need the CIRA assigned registrant number for the receiving registrant if it is being transferred outside our system. Note: You must be logged in and the initiating registrant to perform this function.
Another type of transfer is a registrant merger. This procedure will merge the second Registrant with the first. All domain names of the second (or merged) Registrant will be transferred to the first Registrant. The function will fail if the Registrant has active processes, such as critical information changes, and domain name transfers in progress. Note: You must be the second (or merged) registrant on this system to initiate this action, it is only available when logged in.
